Kimberly Arrington | Missing | Alabama
While everyone is gearing up for the spooky Halloween season, we are quickly approaching the 25th anniversary of the disappearance of Kimberly Arrington, a bright and intelligent 16-year-old who vanished without a trace. Kimberly was last seen at home before heading out to the store she was discussing Christmas gifts with her father, Walter
Kimberly was described by Walter Arrington as "a good girl" who enjoyed listening to music, dancing and learning computers at school, where she was well-behaved. Even looking at her smile you can tell that she was a very sweet girl.
In 1998, Kimberly was a sophomore at Jefferson Davis High School. One day, she was walking to the local CVS to get candy and a soda. It was something most young adults did back then, but she never made it home. I often pass by the now-abandoned CVS where she was last seen, and I wonder what happened and how no one noticed a young girl getting abducted. Leading me to have additional questions I will discuss in my afterthoughts.
The corner of Third Street and Forest Avenue in Montgomery, Alabama |
Kimberly headed out around 4:00/5:00 according to different accounts Walter left for work around that time and Kimberly told her mother she was going to head to the CVS to grab candy and a soda and never returned home which is definitely out of character. The family reported Kimberly missing after a search yielded no results even after several hours.
Initially it appears that investigators are exploring the possibility that the Kimberly might have run away, given her age. However, they are increasingly concerned that she may have been abducted.
Kimberly Arrington's father, Walter, said he is still in shock over the disappearance of his daughter.
"I have been up and down for years," he said, describing the emotional toil Kimberly's disappearance had on him.
Her sister, Jennifer Arrington Youngblood, was 14 years old when her sister went missing. She described not knowing what happened to her older sister as "very stressful."
"She asked me to walk to the store with her," Jennifer said, but for some reason she didn't. She said her sister, who was in 10th grade at Jefferson Davis High School, had severe allergies and liked to stay inside. She wasn't involved with an older man, and it wouldn't have been like her to run away from home.
Someone knows what happened to Kimberly and it's time to help provide the answers to the family today Kimberly would be around 42 now and it is endless of what the future holds or could have been as of today she is still missing.
Afterthoughts
This area has greatly changed over the years the CVS location has since closed all that remains are memories and the unknown that still lingers her mother passed in 2005 not knowing what happened to her daughter. Now her family is still wanting closure and answers on what happened to Kimberly.
The store, located at 1525 Forest Ave, conveniently near Jackson Hospital and Alabama State University, closed permanently on April 16, as indicated by signage on the building |
- What took place after they started considering her a missing child?
- Were searches done outside the efforts of the family? More definitely could have been done on the behalf of the Montgomery Police Department but to be completely honest after living here for the past three years they are extremely lazy and nonchalant when it comes to crime. Especially involving crimes with black women, I would actually say Birmingham also. I can imagine that same behavior has been a constant from what I can tell and from has been told to me from natives.
- Were any of her friends interviewed?
- What is the current progression of this case? Any leads? A 16 doesn't have the means to vanish into thin air no matter how you try to weaponize the youth of a young black girl she isn't and was not an adult at the time of her going missing.
- Is there a cold case division in Montgomery County? If you have the means to build a water park you have the means to help missing black women and cold cases pertaining to the death of black women/girls in the community.
More needs to be done as a collective, as a village we need to hold ourselves to a different standard and help our community. It can't be done alone.
